Trauma-Informed Counselling (Adults 18+)

What is trauma?

According to the American Psychological Association (APA), “Trauma is any disturbing experience that results in significant fear, helplessness, dissociation, confusion, or other disruptive feelings intense enough to have a long-lasting negative effect on a person’s attitudes, behaviour, and other aspects of functioning”.

What is Trauma-Informed Counselling?

Some people carry painful experiences from the past that still affect how they feel and behave today. Trauma-informed counselling online is a specialised approach that creates a safe, paced, and supportive space to gently work through those experiences without the pressure to relive them.

What happens in the sessions?

One of the most common fears people carry into trauma counselling is: “Will I have to relive everything that happened to me?” The answer is no. You will never be asked to revisit painful experiences before you feel ready, or at all, if that is not what you need.

Sessions take place online via a secure video platform, so you can engage from a space where you already feel safe.

In the early sessions, the priority is simply helping you feel settled, grounded, and comfortable. Preethi will spend time getting to know you, not the trauma.

As trust builds and you feel ready, sessions may begin to gently explore how past experiences are showing up in your life today. This is always done carefully, collaboratively, and at a pace that feels manageable. You are in control of how much you share and how deep you go.

Throughout your sessions, Preethi will work with you to:

  • Develop grounding and calming techniques you can use in everyday life
  • Understand how past experiences may be shaping your current thoughts, feelings, and behaviours
  • Gently process difficult emotions in a way that feels safe and contained
  • Rebuild a sense of safety, self-trust, and inner stability
  • Strengthen your capacity to cope when hard feelings arise

Clients who have worked through trauma counselling often describe a gradual but meaningful shift from feeling like the past controls them, to feeling more present, more settled, and more like themselves again.

Who is Trauma-Informed Counselling for?

It is for all adults aged 18 and above experiencing low to moderate mental health difficulties, including:

  • Ongoing impact of past difficult or overwhelming experiences
  • Difficulty managing strong emotions
  • Feeling constantly on edge, or shutting down when things get hard
  • Shame and self-blame
  • Trust and attachment challenges

What therapeutic approaches does the Counsellor use?

Preethi uses a trauma-informed and person-centred approach drawing from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Mindfulness-Based Therapy, Internal Family Systems Therapy (IFS), Narrative Therapy, and Somatic Therapy, tailored to what feels right for you.

Sessions are collaborative, direct and integrative, going at your pace, while gently challenging you when it serves your growth.
