Family Violence Counselling (Adults 18+)
What is Family Violence (Domestic Violence)?
Family violence, also referred to as domestic violence, affects people of all backgrounds. Individuals who have been hurt by their partner, any family member or friend, not just physically, but emotionally, mentally, psychologically, financially, culturally, religiously, sexually or verbally are survivors of family violence.
People who engage in this behaviour (often known as person using violence) use an interplay of power and control including intimidation, threats, fear, coercive control, gaslighting, monitoring of social media, pet abuse, and other manipulative behaviours that result in the victim living in fear.
What happens in the sessions?
Coming forward for support after experiencing family violence takes real courage. Sessions at Raaiter Wellness are a space with no judgement, no pressure, and no expectation that you have everything figured out.
Sessions take place online via a secure video platform, meaning you can engage from wherever feels private and safe for you.
In the early sessions, Preethi will focus on helping you feel emotionally settled and building a genuine sense of trust. You will not be asked to recount incidents in detail or provide evidence of what happened. The focus is on you – how you are feeling now, and what support you need to move forward.
As sessions continue, the work may involve:
- Understanding how family violence and abuse work including the patterns of power, control, and coercive behaviour that can be hard to name when you are inside them
- Making sense of your emotional responses; why you feel the way you do
- Building practical coping skills and emotional regulation tools
- Developing a stronger sense of self-worth and personal boundaries
- Exploring healthier ways of relating to others and to yourself
Clients often describe leaving sessions feeling less alone, more understood, and with a clearer sense of the steps they can take at their own pace, toward a safer, more grounded life.
Who is it for?
It is for all adults aged 18 and above who are experiencing the impact of abusive behaviours and are not in any current ongoing crisis. Sessions are available online, and are accessible from India and internationally.
What therapeutic approaches does the Counsellor use?
Preethi takes a trauma-informed and person-centred approach drawing from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). Where appropriate, psychoeducation is used to help clients understand and recognise family violence patterns.
Sessions are collaborative, direct and integrative, going at your pace, with gentle support throughout.
Please note: Raaiter Wellness does not provide court reports, mandated behaviour change programs, or crisis intervention services. Where specialised or high-risk intervention is required, referrals will be provided.
If you are in immediate danger, please contact your local emergency services.
All sessions are one-on-one online counselling sessions, available via telehealth from the comfort of your home.
